The BPF Net Zero Pledge
The BPF Net Zero Pledge calls on BPF members to be net zero carbon across their businesses and assets by 2050 at the latest.
Members who sign the Pledge commit to three principal actions:
Members commit to setting verifiable net zero targets and plans
SHARE
Members commit to sharing research, knowledge and insight on an open-source basis
SUPPORT
Members commit to supporting each other, and the wider industry, to accelerate the transition to net zero
To take the Pledge, members need to sign up to setting net zero carbon targets and plans.
The Pledge is intended to work alongside and support existing sector and industry net zero initiatives. As such, the BPF will not be developing another net zero standard or framework, or creating a new verification process. Instead, we will be encouraging members to work to existing industry standards and evidence progress through existing schemes such as the UN Race to Zero and the BBP Climate Commitment.
We also recognise that – given the diversity of BPF members – different approaches to setting targets and reporting will suit different types of member.
Members will set net zero targets and plans that are right for them. They will however need to be in line with the science, and they will need to be independently verified.
Many members will already have net zero targets and plans. Those who do not, will have 12 months from taking the Pledge to put plans and targets in place.
To take the Pledge, members need to commit to sharing research, knowledge and insight on an open-source basis.
We want to encourage “radical collaboration” across the sector and foster a culture of cooperation to deliver joint initiatives and deliver on our climate change commitments.
The sharing of resources and research is something the BPF is uniquely placed to provide between its members. Without this radical collaboration, we won’t find the radical solutions we need.
As part of this collaboration and co-operation, the BPF will be launching a net zero network, which includes online resources, new communication channels, webinars and events.
To take the Pledge, members commit to supporting each other, and the wider industry, to accelerate the transition to net zero.
A key aim of the campaign is to help and support all members on their journey to net zero by leveraging the BPF’s reach across the real estate industry and connecting small and large members. We want to harness the insights and experience of those members who are already well on the way to net zero to help those who are just starting.
As part of this, we will be generate and share resources, create peer networks, provide training and pilot a mentoring project.
