Event Details
We're thrilled to unveil the return of the popular BPF Annual Dinner for 2024. Set against the iconic backdrop of London's Guildhall, our annual dinner promises to be a social highlight for BPF members and their guests. Prepare for an evening of quality and elegance, as we come together to celebrate in style.
We're especially delighted to announce that this year’s after dinner speaker is The Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt. One of the UK's most recognisable politicians, Penny was an MP for 14 years, during which time she held nine ministerial roles and was the first woman to hold the role of Secretary of State for Defence. She gained international recognition for presiding over the Accession Council following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and at the coronation of King Charles III – including for her impressive sword-carrying skills! Join us to hear Penny’s reflections on life at the top of government, the current state of politics both at home and abroad, and what the future holds.

After Dinner Speaker
The Rt Hon Penny MordauntPenny Mordaunt was a Parliamentarian for 14 years, holding nine ministerial roles, four in Cabinet, including Secretary of State for Defence- the first women to have done that job.
She came to the public’s attention in the role of Leader of the Commons and Lord President of the Council, presiding over the Accession Council following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and at the coronation of King Charles III. In that role she oversaw the whole legislative process and chaired the Parliamentary Business and Legislation committee – the gateway cabinet committee for all legislation. She used this position to get changes to the Valuation Office during the passage of the Levelling up Bill.
Her first role was as a Minister in Local Government and she has personally campaigned to improve planning and planning capacity in councils. She called the lack of such capacity ‘the biggest block on growth’. As Minister for disabled people she championed the global disability innovation hub and its work on the built environment and was the Minister for the Health and safety executive.
As Paymaster General she was became the UK government’s first cross-government defensive cyber lead and led the rebuild of the UK’s civil contingencies and resilience strategy. She been Secretary of State for International Development, working with UN agencies, international organisations and she was the UK’s representative at the World Bank. She argued that the aid budget rules should be modified to enable nations to fund capital costs to provide housing for refugees and co-fund community infrastructure.
As Trade Minister she brokered new trade deals, oversaw the UK’s accession to CPTPP and established economic agreements with US states, in lieu of a federal deal. In doing so she undertook the longest tour of the US of any Minister since Churchill during WWII. She was also on the Withdrawal Agreement Joint Committee overseeing the UK’s exit from the EU.
She has held other roles in work, health, equalities and pensions.
Prior to Parliament she worked in local government, trade organisations, charities, healthcare, the national lottery and was an aid worker. She founded her own media business in 2006 and was Head of Foreign Press for the RNC during the Bush 2000 campaign in the US
She was a Royal Navy Reservist for 10 years and is now an Honorary Captain affiliated to MCM2 Squadron, the UK’s mine hunters and bomb disposal divers. She is co-author of Greater: Britain after the storm, which made bestseller lists in the UK and the US.
She has won Parliamentary Wit of the Year, Spectator speech of the year, was among Gracia and Vogue’s most influential women of the year.
She is one of only four women to have been asked to address the Saints and Sinners club, the others being Princess Anne, Margaret Thatcher and Dame Vera Lynn.
